The grass is high after bountiful spring rains, so a cleanup is set for 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at Eastlawn Memorial Cemetery at the northeast corner of FM Road 369 and Bacon Switch Road.

The East Project, the event sponsor, seeks volunteers with a servant's heart and a desire to serve the Wichita Falls community, according to an event flyer.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring lawn maintenance equipment and come join the East Project community team to mow grass and trim around headstones so families can visit mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and others who have been buried there since the cemetery opened in 1956.
1,332 people are buried at Eastlawn Memorial Cemetery, according to the Find a Grave website, https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/3340/eastlawn-memorial-cemetery. In addition, 70% of the headstones have been photographed with 51% identified with GPS coordinates.

Those contributing their time will make a huge difference and bring comfort to the many with relatives and friends buried at the cemetery.
Founded by the Rev. Ricky McGee as founder and other community members, the East Project has hosted monthly cleanups during spring and summer months in recent years.
For Memorial Day 2024, they were joined by the Thomas Fowler American Legion Post 169 in recognition of the many veterans interred at the cemetery.
